Welcome to Grand Valley State University!
Your student is in good hands
Welcome to Grand Valley State University! As the parent or guardian of a prospective student, we want to give you a glimpse of what it’s like to be part of the Laker family.
First off, we may not be the school you remember from when you were college-aged. We still offer the same student-focused education and outstanding value, but we’ve grown with West Michigan and evolved to meet the needs of today's -- and tomorrow's -- college students.
We've grown to become the third largest university in Michigan, but maintain our small school feel. Through personalized attention and extensive resources, Grand Valley is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment in which your student can thrive.
With a strong emphasis on academic excellence, faculty engagement, and an inclusive campus culture, we ensure every student receives the education and encouragement they need to succeed.

Offering Steadfast Support
At Grand Valley, we understand the importance of physical, mental, and social wellness. Our campus offers a variety of resources, including modern fitness facilities, mental health services, and numerous social activities and clubs. We are dedicated to providing the support students need to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle, ensuring their overall well-being is nurtured alongside their academic growth.
Additionally, our Social Justice Centers and programs like Laker Connections foster an inclusive environment where students can engage in meaningful dialogue and advocacy.
Providing a Safe Learning Environment
We want students to feel like campus is their home away from home, and safety and security are a big part of that.
Living on-campus offers safe neighborhoods and a supportive environment with five different housing options to choose from. Students live in close proximity to classes, campus recreation opportunities, dining facilities, and support services, while enjoying 24-7 security from our GVPD and our Department of Public Safety. This provides peace of mind, which is crucial in building an effective learning environment; and is one of the reasons why students who live on campus get higher grades than those who don't. On-campus residents are also more likely to stay in school.
